This was bottled in 1980 and distilled in the late 1960s.

TASTING NOTES

The lightness and floral sweetness that define the 12-year-old are a direct product of Cardhu’s six pear-shaped copper pot stills with rounded shoulders and tall necks, which promote significant reflux and produce one of the more delicate new makes in Speyside. Matured in ex-bourbon casks for twelve years, the wood contributes vanilla, toffee, and a gentle honey sweetness without imposing any significant tannin structure. The result is a whisky that functions beautifully as an introduction to Speyside and a reliable everyday pour, even if it leaves enthusiasts wanting more weight and length than 40% can reliably provide.

Nose

Fresh, sweet, and inviting — the nose is the strongest component of this expression. Pear, green apple, and light citrus lead, alongside honey, heather, and a gentle floral quality that leans toward meadow flowers rather than anything more assertive. Vanilla, caramel, and soft malt provide a creamy backdrop, with occasional notes of hay, coconut, butter rolls, and mango adding tropical warmth. Hints of chocolate, toffee, and a delicate wood note develop with time. Clean and pleasant throughout, though some tasters note a slight alcoholic sharpness at full strength that dissipates quickly with air.

Palate

Soft and smooth on arrival, with a silky texture that is the whisky's most celebrated characteristic. Apple, pear, mandarin, and light citrus carry the fruit profile, supported by honey, vanilla, and a gentle maltiness. Some tasters detect light sherry notes, blackcurrant, or stone fruit. The mid-palate introduces a mild oak dryness and a light spice of ginger and pepper, though both remain restrained. The overall impression is gentle and approachable, occasionally bordering on thin — the 40% ABV limits the depth and richness that the nose suggests is possible.

Finish

Short to medium in length, soft, and gently drying. Honey, barley sugar, and vanilla linger longest, with a pleasant oak note and a light bitterness providing structure at the close. Some tasters find a touch of sherry sweetness or fruit returning in the final moments. Clean and inoffensive — pleasant rather than memorable, inviting another sip through ease rather than complexity.

About Cardhu

Cardhu is a Speyside distillery near Archiestown, Moray, Scotland founded by the whisky smuggler John Cumming in 1824. The distillery is currently run by Diageo and the distillery's Scotch whisky makes up an important part of the famous Johnnie Walker blended whiskies.

The word "Cardhu" derives from the Scots Gaelic Carn Dubh, meaning "Black Rock".

Legally established in 1824 by John Cumming, as Cardow distillery, it’s been long suspected that distilling was carried out on this site since the early 1800s. The distillery was rebuilt in 1884, before the blending company of John Walker & Sons from Kilmarnock took an interest in the 1890s, as they went about acquiring stakes in various distilleries. In 1893, they purchased the distillery and Cardhu has been forever associated with the striding man. The distillery itself has grown in tandem with the Johnnie Walker brand and changed its name to Cardhu in 1981 with a visitor centre also constructed just prior to the millennium. Most famously, in 2002, it launches a vatted single malt which comprises of malts from other Diageo distilleries. This isn’t well-received in some parts of the industry, in particular by rival competitor William Grant & Sons. Diageo eventually cancels the range in 2004 and since has focused on building the Cardhu single malt range, which enjoys staunch international support in countries such as Spain.

CONDITION NOTES

Inside of box has slight deterioration from moisture and plastic cellophane seal is loose however the whisky is unaffected

43% ABV

100cl / 1 Litre

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1052/9737/9666/files/Cardhu12YearOldPureMaltTravelRetailExclusiveSpeysideSingleMaltScotchWhisky_1980_100cl.jpg?v=1782568166
https://whiskysituation.co.uk/products/cardhu-12-year-old-pure-malt-travel-retail-exclusive-speyside-single-malt-scotch-whisky-1980s-100cl
