On the palate, a more fragrant refrain introduced hibiscus tea, mint and marmalade, with further suggestions of quince jelly. Juiciness prevailed with the addition of water, encouraging gooseberries, blackcurrants, and sliced red apple to dance alongside oaty biscuits and maple syrup flapjacks. A twist of lemon induced a fresh tang as it swirled into melting butter. Then the tongue was once again treated to a display of deliciousness, as apple blossom honey, elderberry jam, and sweet digestive biscuits aligned in the most charming way.

About Mannochmore

A large distillery with half a dozen stills, here a light style is produced though without the oily background of its sister plant, Glenlossie.

Flowers are more to the fore here, with delicate fruits that gain in weight when matured. Although the full tale of how Loch Dhu was created has never been told (and is unlikely ever to be revealed), the enthusiastic use of spirit caramel is seen by most as the most likely candidate for the pitch black hue.

The brand was withdrawn soon after its launch and despite the hostility of the initial response when it first appeared it has now, perhaps inevitably, become a collector’s item.

Production capacity was upped in 2013 to 4.5m litres per annum with new mash tun, more washbacks and a pair of stills – now making eight in total.

43.8% ABV

70cl

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1052/9737/9666/files/Mannochmore28YearOld1996SMWSSingleBourbonBarrel64.164QuinceCharmingSpeysideSingleMaltScotchWhisky_2025_70cl.jpg?v=1782698374
https://whiskysituation.co.uk/products/mannochmore-28-year-old-1996-smws-single-bourbon-barrel-64-164-quince-charming-speyside-single-malt-scotch-whisky-2025-70cl
