Originally the range did not have a name. However the late whisky writer Michael Jackson nicknamed it the \"Flora and Fauna\" because of the various depictions on the labels.\u003cspan\u003e The name has stuck, and is known worldwide as Flora and Fauna.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003e\u003cspan\u003eTASTING NOTES\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe nose is full and robust with a silken smoothness. There are notes of spicy warmth from the oak, a touch of smoke with kippers and mocchaccino and notes of cereal and malted barley. The palate is quite full and dry. There are notes of oily nuts and dark chocolate and espresso beans. Hints of smoke with cereal notes and developing oak. It was bottled – from Sherry cask – as part of the Flora \u0026amp; Fauna range while there are occasional bottlings from Diageo’s annual Special Release programme.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePittyvach was a utilitarian-looking distillery which was built for purely commercial purposes and was Arthur Bell \u0026amp; Sons’ response to the sudden leap in the brand’s fortunes in the 1970s when it became Britain’s top-selling blend and anything seemed possible.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe firm already ran the Dufftown distillery and so in 1975 erected a shed next door and installed two – eventually four – stills inside. Bell’s was bought by Guinness in 1985, with the latter firm going on to controversially purchase DCL the year after to form United Distillers. A period of rationalisation of distilling capacity followed and Pittyvaich was considered as surplus to requirements.
