For one week each year, Speyside's Balvenie distillery mixes things up, switching from its usual unpeated style, to producing peated single malt with Speyside peat! Inspired by his findings on a trip to Islay, distillery manager Ian Millar initiated the annual project, proving that it's not all about Islay when it comes to splendid peated whisky. The classic honeyed sweetness of this deliciously rich malt brings marvellous balance to layers of elegant smoke.
What makes a revered distillery like Balvenie special is that it delights in occasionally experimenting despite being one of the most traditional distilleries around. Consider the fact that they grow their own barley, have their own malting floor and their own coopers and coppersmiths.
Ian Millar, Distillery Manager at Balvenie, inspired by a visit to Islay, ordered Speyside peat for his kiln and instituted ‘The Week of Peat’ – something they now do yearly before their annual cleaning and maintenance of their distillery equipment.
The Balvenie 17 Year Old The Week of Peat has flavours of butterscotch honey, floral notes, citrus fruits and vanilla sweetness. It comes at a strength of 49.4% ABV and is non-chill filtered.
This is a sweet and creamy whisky with a lovely aroma of peat smoke.
Nose Sweet peat and floral honey mingle, with roasted malt and buttery fudge in tow.
Palate A generous balance of vanilla and oak char welcome the way for more hearty smoke. Things remain sweet, with silky butterscotch and baking spice.
Finish The peat smoke lingers with delicately floral malt, poached fruits, creamy, oaken vanilla, and a dash of cinnamon.
