The Scotch Malt Whisky Society was founded in Edinburgh in 1983 by Phillip 'Pip' Hills who, while travelling around Scotland in the 1970s, fell in love with whiskies drawn straight from the cask. After he expanded his syndicate the Society was purchased by Glenmorangie PLC in 2004. In 2015, the Society was sold back to private investors. In June 2021, the private owners floated the holding company The Artisanal Spirits Company plc on the Alternative Investment Market of the London Stock Exchange.

It has a unique code system where the first number refers to the distillery and the second refers to the cask from which the bottle comes. SMWS also offers the largest range of distilleries of any independent bottler. These curiously named drams really do have something for every whisky lover!

The SMWS are one of the Britain's most revered independent bottlers with a worldwide network of partner bars with one mission of getting as much whisky at natural cask strength without water to different nations including USA, Canada, Switzerland, UK, Austria, Germany and many others.

These older labels from the first runs are mostly with distillation methods that include direct heat which was replaced with steam for many distilleries for environmental reasons changing the taste of whisky forever. It'll get real interesting when nuclear fusion is used to distil whisky. We might glow green for a few weeks after we drink the stuff. Who knows.... but all we know is that the old stuff has a musky taste that is VERY welcomed by people nowadays trying to time travel through whisky's past.

TASTING NOTES

Luscious creamy butter melted into walnut oil before trickling over Japanese plums and greengage fruit mixed into soft couscous. On the palate, satsumas and bananas blended into exotic fruit juice before cumin spice and a bitter finish of chocolate stout rounded off the flavours. Sweet digestive biscuits emerged with water, settling quickly into a cheesecake base topped with rich demerara sugar and served with a shot of pear eau de vie spirit in creamy porridge. The spices had now flourished into Szechuan peppers, cinnamon and nutmeg, balanced by a hint of aniseed and sticky orange blossom honey.

About Few Spirits

A grain-to-glass distillery since 2011, FEW Spirits produces award–winning craft whiskey and gin in a tucked away alley located in the growing Chicago suburb of Evanston, IL..

FEW Spirits is an American craft distillery based in Evanston, Illinois, just outside of Chicago. They pride themselves on producing everything from grain to glass; every aspect of the production of their spirits is done by them. They currently produce a range of award-winning gins and whiskies, all using ingredients sourced as local to the distillery as possible.

Evanston is also the home of prohibition, for it was here that Frances Elizabeth Willard championed the temperance movement with the Women’s Christian Temperance Union. As a not-so-subtle nod to her achievements, Paul Hletko named his distillery FEW Spirits when it became the first distillery in Evanston since prohibition. Every FEW Spirits label carries with it some local heritage by depicting a different scene from the Chicago World’s Fair of 1893.

The distillery has two copper pot stills. Their first still is a custom built german hybrid still and is used to produce the whiskey, as well as to strip low wines for gin production. The second still is also custom built, but is optimized for gin production. Since Few places all of their gin botanicals directly in the pot, the use of a separate still for gin production ensures that the gin flavors don't mix with their whiskey.

Although a relatively young distillery, Few has rapidly gained acclaim. Social and Cocktail named Few American Gin the most exciting spirit product introduced in the UK in 2012, and the Beverage Testing Institute awarded the Few Barrel Gin the highest rating given a gin in 5 years. Few was even picked as one of the gins for the Ginvent calendar in 2012.
