The 2001 Barolo Monprivato is striking. It boasts gorgeous textural depth and richness to match its highly expressive, compelling aromatics. The wine has begun to soften a touch. Though not at all forbidding at this stage, the 2001 Monprivato remains an infant with at least two more decades of fine drinking ahead. Mascarello's 2001 Barolo Monprivato opens with a delicate perfumed nose and layers of expressive sweet red fruit on medium-bodied frame, with much length, elegance and finesse, closing with fine, silky tannins. Though deceptively understated today, it is likely to put on weight in the bottle and become more even more complex over the next few years. 95/100 (10.2006)

Critic tasting note: "This has the usual, well-intact, medium-tone ruby color while the aroma is intriguing with its wonderful smoked note and a slight scent of face powder that enrich a pleasing balsamic and floral bouquet which has a touch of prune together with scents of yellow peach jam. The flavor is excellent and again very elegant even if a little less thick, with tannins acting as a true reference point in a lovely progression. As always this is not a muscular wine but one with a great, elegant progression and a clear finish, compact, consistent and extremely satisfying. The prune returns in the after-aroma but only slightly, a sign of great youth." - 91/100 , Doctorwine
