Glen Moray 13 Year Old 2010 Dram Mor Single First Fill Tojaki Wine Hogshead Cask #800597 (2024) 70cl
1 of 222 bottles produced
Soft and fruity are the key words when talking of Glen Moray which makes it a very amenable partner with American oak. It is believed that the closeness of the river and the high water table produces a slightly warmer and more humid microclimate which assists maturation. Since the La Martiniquaise takeover [see below] a higher percentage of first-fill American oak is used, adding more buttery notes to the mix. It was one of the first whiskies to be ‘finished’ in wine casks – Chenin Blanc and Chardonnay specifically – as well as Port. After a few quiet years, new releases are beginning to appear. Some peated malt is now being run as well.
Glen Moray is a less looked at Speyside distillery compared to some of the others and the development in their spirit creation and cask trials have been producing better and better quality whisky as time goes on. Hugely underrated and the first dram poured of some of these will tell you that right away.
About Dram Mor
Dràm Mòr is an independent spirits bottler established in 2019 by husband and wife team Kenny and Viktorija Macdonald. The company started as an export agency for Scottish brands, but as demand for independent, high-quality spirits increased, we decided it was time to venture into the world of independent bottling. They provide bespoke single cask spirits to 14 countries worldwide and they're delighted to grow the business portfolio to include a range of spirits along with carefully selected whiskies. Today, their products can be found in specialty spirits retailers, Michelin Star restaurants, and bespoke wine and gourmet outlets worldwide. Viktorija and Kenny both have backgrounds working for Whisky companies and are the co-founders of the Mòr Whisky Club held at Oran Mòr, Glasgow.
Colour: Jasmine yellow.
Nose: A little more mute than you would normally expect from a dram of this age and in this White Port cask in particular, which excites me as I know it is holding something back from me...
Palate: This is just what I want from white port. Sweet (but not too sweet). Fruity but so well integrated. The classic gentle melon with a honey nut crunch that tends to accompany White Port is there but again we have not allowed the oak to dictate as the malty, slightly citric Glen Moray starts to shine through. Again, balance is the key!
Finish: The freshness of the finish cannot be ignored. It is a pretty unique finish with a soft oaky, nutty flavour developing amounts all that fruity honey. Plays delightfully on the tongue for an age.
