Glengoyne Teapot Dram Batch #8

If you have tried any of these, then you will not really need to read on any further.
Glengoyne's tribute to the daily dram that the Distillery folk enjoyed three times each day from the copper teapot in the distillery canteen. Exclusive to the Distillery and presented at full warehouse strength, this is a unique vatting of 5 young 1st fill sherry casks.

Up until the early 1980s Glengoyne’s men were given three large drams of cask strength Glengoyne a day - breakfast, lunch and afternoon break.

Once a week the Brewer, Ron Low, and the excise men would select the best first fill sherry cask they could find to become that week’s dram. However, if the younger men didn’t want one of their drams they would pour it into the old copper teapot that sat in the rest room.

The more “seasoned” drinkers would then help themselves to additional drams from the teapot throughout the day – everyone was happy.

The Teapot Dram was created to encapsulate those days, and consists of five first fill sherry casks between the ages of nine and 11 years old. The Teapot Dram is bottled at cask strength and exclusive to Glengoyne Distillery.

Sitting on the Highland/Lowland border, Glengoyne distills its whisky in the Highlands and matures it in the Lowlands. Founded in 1833, under the name Burnfoot, the distillery is now owned by Ian MacLeod distillers, which champions its slow distillation process and a complete lack of peat as well as a rigorous approach to its sherry cask selection. It selects its own trees in Spain and allows the wood to air dry for two years before it is used for a further two years to age Oloroso sherry.

TASTING NOTES BY WHISKY MAGAZINE:

Rob Allanson

TASTER

Nose: Takes me right back to church with polished pews and heavy old clothes. Dried fruit with the sharp tang of young pineapple. A rich, luscious creamy edge to it.

Palate: Sweetness and fruit notes. Red apples and grilled pineapples abound and then dried fruits with cranberries, apricots and peaches. Some rich dark chocolate coated orange segments and ginger.

Finish: Lingers with plenty of wood notes and dried cranberries.

Comment: Teetering on the sherry bomb territory, very lovely and very moreish.

Score: 8.4

Lyndsey Gray

TASTER

Nose: Dried apricots, crème brulée, orange marmalade on toast and gingerbread. Hot sandalwood, roasted hazelnuts and teacakes balance the spicy with the sweet.

Palate: Spices with gingerbread and like sipping on a hot toddy with cinnamon, cloves and hot citrus. A sweetness behind the spice.

Finish: Warm and spicy with a buttery texture.

Comment: Drinking a hot toddy on a cold winter’s day.

Score: 8.9
