Glenmorangie 10 Year Old Traditional 100° Proof (2005) 1 Litre
A journey to the past for those who love a decent Highland malt.
This limited release of the now-discontinued Old Style Glenmorangie Single Malt was bottled in 2005 at 57.2% ABV, after having matured in Mountain Oak casks for ten years. It is part of the ‘Traditional 100 Proof’ series. The ‘100 proof’ is a nod to the old proof system in Scotland. Unlike American proof, Scottish proof is not simply double the ABV. In the olden days, before any official measuring systems were introduced, it was difficult to confirm the alcohol content of whisky. To prevent fraud on the part of whisky makers, the gunpowder method was invented. The whisky was mixed with gunpowder and then ignited. If the mixture could burn, the whisky was rated ‘proof’. 100 proof corresponds to about 57% ABV. This system of course wasn’t waterproof, but it worked well enough.
Glenmorangie is rather overlooked on the collecting and investment circuits. Glenmorangie was the first distillery to develop the idea of ‘cask finishing’ and present it to the whisky public. We all know the Lasanta (Sherry), Quinta Ruban (Port) and Nectar D’Or (Sauternes) have long established themselves as go-to bottles for people wanting to work their way through a variety of cask influences. With Doctor Bill Lumsden still at the helm of whisky production and creativity at Glenmorangie, he has taken hold of so many unique grains, yeasts, casks, and general whisky opportunities to bring people into whisky and make it as welcoming and fun as possible.
