Lagavulin 12 Year Old 2021 Special Release 70cl
This right here is the Lagavulin 12 Year old from Diageo's 2021 Special Releases! A regular sight in the Special Releases, this expression has enjoyed a dozen years of maturation in refill American oak casks before being bottled up at 56.5% ABV. The theme for the Special Releases this time was 'Legends Untold', and as such, this one features a lion on the label. But not just any lion, mind. It's a lion with a flaming mane!
This year’s Special Releases Collection unlocks the hidden stories from each of the iconic distilleries and brings them to life via fictional mythical creatures which tie into the brand’s heritage. At first taste this fiery whisky offers notes of lemon, salty-sweetness, and roasted tea. An intense blackened wood taste follows, with chili pepper and smoke for a warming and drying finish. A classic Lagavulin 12, striking in every way. This fierce, smoky scotch is best enjoyed neat or with a little water. I
Nose The smoke is quite restrained, maritime with distant bonfires and lime. Just a little hint of bacon Frazzles.
Palate Black pepper, saline and wood smoke, a little wood tannin and then some sweeter toffee notes.
Finish Black pepper, smoke and salt with that citrus note coming back in.
More Complex Tasting Notes
There’s an ashtray in here, some tobacco, and a slightly medicinal note. There’s also some apples roasted on a bonfire, freshly pitted olives and maybe even a little tuna in brine. There’s a creamy, butteriness here aswell, maybe butter that’s been taken a bit too far and turned slightly bitter. The peat is there, but it’s lighter than we had initially anticipated.
A French cream puff meets a smoking gun. Ready salted crisps, some fishiness (maybe a lobster bisque?) and some of that salted seawater alongside. The mouthfeel is actually really good, very luscious but there’s a heavy alcohol burn that introduces itself as the whisky finishes, leaving a peppery note in your throat. Sitting here, even after a sip of beer, we’re still getting a smokey, savouriness that won’t dissipate.
