Laphroaig Ian Hunter Book 2 30 Year Old Unique Character (2020) 70cl
This is the second chapter of a five part series that tells the story of Ian Hunter. This guy was instrumental in setting up the Laphroaig Distillery and getting their whisky sent around the world.
This second chapter is all about the building of the warehouse that still houses all the company’s whisky today. It’s set on the shore, where the whisky can absorb all the life-giving nutrients that come in off the sea there.
I think what I love most about the whole package is the heritage. The book has been built to house the bottle. That bottle contains liquid that has been aged for a full 30 years. This makes the whole package something truly unique, and the price reflects that.
The tasting notes on this quite frankly ancient whisky are interesting. It’s been aged in Spanish Oak Oloroso Sherry Oak Casks. However, there’s no hint of what it tastes like. I think this is because there’s so little of it, and Laphroaig wants to sell it all.
Nose First thing you notice is the iodine, classic Laphroaig, and then meaty notes like smoked bacon but with a sweet maple syrup cure, toffee, with spices such as pink peppercorns, chilli and liquorice.
Palate Spicy peppery notes with seaweed and that iodine note again, creamy full nutty texture with stone fruit, rose petal and toffee.
Finish Long with nuts and a lemon peel lift.
Overall A rich dark old dram but that Laphroaig Distillery character still dominates after all this time.
