For those that have tried Macallan Sherry Oak 12, 15 or even 18 or beyond.... the Rare Cask are their extra Oloroso flavoured editions of the sherry oak and each year, although not officially age stated, the bottles are approx 15-18 and the better casks that have gained more colour and flavour are picked out to encompass these rare cask editions.

Crafted only from casks which exhibit a rich depth of natural colour, a distinctive sweet raisin flavour and a rich, velvety smooth mouthfeel.

Rare Cask is a distinctive single malt whisky crafted from unique oak casks which exhibit an intense sweet raisin flavour profile and an incredible, rich, smooth complexity. These hand selected casks are a rare and special discovery.

Macallan's new Rare Cask uses handpicked first-fill sherry casks from the top 1% of barrels currently aging at the distillery. The result is a richer, darker, more chocolaty version of Macallan with a thicker profile and a complex palate of raisins, sultana, orange peel, and ginger. With the current market craze for first-fill sherry whisky, à la Aberlour, A'Bunadh and Glendronach, the Rare Cask represents an aggressive and more modern approach from the typically conservative Macallan. This is a bold, chewy, full-bodied single malt that showcases the deep stocks and the immaculate wood management from Scotland's most iconic distillery. It's a whisky that provides a peek into the most choice sherry-aged whiskies currently available

Soft aromas of vanilla with rich raisin lead the journey of discovery into this single malt whisky, followed by a sweet fusion of fresh apple, lemon and orange. Intense sweet raisin flavours dominate the palate, before giving way to vanilla and dark chocolate, with layers of light citrus zest.
