Tamnavulin 10 Year Old 2008 Dram Mor Single Cask #110915 Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky (2023) 70cl

1 of 225 Bottles

Matured in a Bourbon Hogshead. Distilled in 2008, the whisky matured in a refill bourbon barrel and was independently bottled by Dràm Mòr

Who are Tamnavulin?

In the 19th century, the term ‘Glenlivet’ was used to describe the whiskies of what we now know as Speyside. Its ubiquity also resulted in distilleries appending the name to their own. The irony of this is that until 1965 there was only one distillery in the glen of the River Livet - The Glenlivet. Tamnavulin was the second.

This is a large plant whose sign rather baldly states ‘NO VISITORS’ rather than ‘WELCOME’. This is not unfriendliness, simply a manifestation of the reality of the whisky business. In fact, there used to be a visitor facility nearby. The majority of distilleries are there to make spirit for blends, not to entertain tourists.

Its half dozen stills are large, the fermentation short and the make is light and cereal accented.

Tamnavulin was one of the distilleries built in the whisky boom of the early 1960s when demand was so far outstripping supply that new facilities had to be constructed. It was built by Invergordon Distillers (whose portfolio also included a grain distillery, Bruichladdich, Tullibardine and Jura). It had six stills and, for a period, Saladin maltings.

Invergordon was in turn bought by Whyte & Mackay. In 1995, with the whisky market in steady decline, it was mothballed, only reopening in 2007 when Whyte & Mackay was purchased by Indian giant United Spirits. Its function as a supplier of fillings however hasn’t altered. It changed hands once again in 2014 when Whyte & Mackay was sold to Philippine-based Emperador.

TASTING NOTES

Colour: Mustard yellow

Nose: There is something from childhood in this glass and depending on which part on the world that you live in it will relate to a different sweet. For us in Scotland there is a “dolly mixture” sweetness mixed with orchard fruits and a touch of mango without the overripe sweetness. This is not just a Bourbon nose but it carries oak and Frankincense, lightly perfumed and delicate. One that you could nose all day long!

Palate: This is an absolute joy! Soft and warm. The use of a refill bourbon in this dram really allows the spirit to tell its story without being stifled by the overbearing oak. Caramel and golden syrup, American cream soda with a little something that almost seems to fizz on the tongue. All you would look for in a Bourbon finish is there and then some but the key to this stunner is balance. It way out punches its timid ten year status with a delightful performance on the palate.

Finish: Let’s just say that I hope your not planning anything else soon as this beauty is going to be with you for a good wee while. Long and sweet, building to a gentle heat that fills the mouth, it dances over the taste buds, pulling and tickling as it goes and just when you think it’s had enough, back it comes to do it all over again, leaving effervescence on the tongue. What a dram!
