The Westfalian 2012 10 Year Old Masterpiece 2013 Ex Macallan Sherry Hogshead Single Cask TW74 German Single Malt Whisky (2024) 50cl
1 of 238 bottles
Sorry for the long title but that is the way they have made this in Germany.
Matured in 2nd Fill Sherry Oaks Hogsheads used to make Macallan Sherry Oak. This independent bottler likes to experiment with many a cask but not many at all will leave German soil. So this is a very rare opportunity to acquire one of these.
A German spirit with the touch of Scotland. Nice!
TASTING NOTES
Nose: A wonderful blend of dark fruity sherry notes and mild cinnamon peat smoke, prunes with crispy bacon coating, black cherry jam, worn leather and medium-strong tobacco, pumpernickel, malty dark beer sauce on roast beef with cranberries, dark chocolate, raisins, dried orange peel, the odd date, juicy dried apricots, fig pulp, aromatic oak wood forms a stable base and adds a few spice notes, allspice, mace, anise.
Palate: Intense start, but not hot or alcoholic, the refilled sherry cask gives a good boost, dark fruit with lots of prune and black cherry, black currant, raisin, date, dried figs and apricots, the oak is not to be scrimped on either, noble, bitter chocolate without great bitterness. lots of leather and tobacco, black tea turns into espresso, hearty malt with delicate bacony peat smoke aromas, baked banana with spicy forest honey, dark gravy, the spices make their way to round it off, cinnamon, aniseed, nutmeg, allspice, vanilla, tonka bean
Finish: Very long finish, the oak spice leaves a pleasant underlying warmth, but there is no trace of alcohol, cinnamon, leather, tobacco, aniseed, nutmeg, white pepper, dark chocolate with raisins and pieces of dates, a fine dried fruit mix introduces the finish consisting of apricots, plums and figs, bacony peat smoke settles in a thin layer on the taste buds and, together with a hint of vanilla and the mixture of dry wood and dried fruit, determines the aftertaste
Rating: With this bottling, ''The Westfalian'' proves in an impressive way that the distillate made from peated malt does not necessarily have to be in a barrel with smoky pre-filling is required to produce a wonderful "peated malt". The great cask, with its flawless and lush sherry notes, provides a real treat for the palate with an excellently integrated, very high alcohol content. A real masterpiece, and not just according to the label!
