Tomintoul 31 Year Old 1973 Single Cask Murray McDavid Mission Series 4 (2004) Signed by Jim McEwan 70cl
Founded by 3 gentleman in 1996, Mark Reynier, Simon Coughlin, and Gordon Wright. Murray McDavid would be most famous for the purchasing of Bruichladdich on the 19 December 2000 which lay dormant at the time. Murray McDavid was bought over by Aces in 2013 but that wasn’t the end for the company, their legacy continued by bottling exceptional single malts without chill-filtering or adding colour. They really ACEd this market, a term coined referring to “Additional Cask Enhancement” which involved additional finishing of casks. The large majority of the whisky community attribute the success of both Bruichladdich and Murray McDavid to a gentleman, James McEwan who has more than 50 years of experience in the whisky industry. He lead from the front and was distillery and production manager.
A 1973 distillation from Tomintoul, this single malt was matured for 31 years. Bottled as part of the Murray McDavid Mission series.
TASTING NOTES AND COMMENTARY FROM JIM MCEWAN
A big boy with lots of robust flavor for a 31 year old in Boubon cask. Very limited! (Susan Purnell, K & L Spirit Buyer) "A beautiful wild heather note greets you immediately. Bracken and fern with a little note of drying peat followed by a touch of Highland spiciness, then wild fruits, blackberry, hawthorn, redcurrant. The oak surrounds but never dominates the proceedings. Like all Highlanders, the aromas take a little time to show their strengths. It’s fairly robust. Tightly layered and just a little shy, the spicy sweet fruit and heather flavours emerge slowly behind the initial heat of the spirit and a bitter chocolate and smoky twigs flavours follows them in turn. Beautiful, deep and remarkably fresh for such a mature malt. Obviously the snow covered mountain air plays a large part in its development. Take a walk on the wild side.
