Tomintoul 36 Year Old 1977 Vintage Single Sherry Cask Speyside Single Malt Whisky (2013) 70cl
The second ever single cask release form Tomintoul, this single sherry cask was distilled on April 12th 1977. A rich and complex sherried whisky, only 297 bottles came out of the cask, of which each is individually hand numbered.
Tomintoul is severely underrated as a Speyside brand principally due to their lack of desire to spend money on anything other than whisky production & materials. Their owner, Terry Hillman, is a humble man of hard work as a principle who simply chooses to focus on the making of Whisky with a stubborn belief that if someone does something well enough, then that person who finds it will tell another about it. At 95 years of age, the man still exhibits at festivals and stands there for 8 hours in a row without asking for anything other than for people to come to try the whiskies.
Their single casks are a true testament to what the brand is about and if you have not had one of them yet, then we implore you to spend whatever amount of money you have to simply experience one of them, as it leaves us in awe of their ability to make exquisite whisky that stands up to any other brand side by side.
Value for money, it is simply evident.
About Tomintoul
Tomintoul distillery was built in Speyside in 1965 by two whisky brokering companies. It was later acquired by the parent firm of Whyte & Mackay, and folded into their portfolio in 1973. While its main function was the provision of its blends, as with all of its distilleries, Whyte & Mackay also had faith in its appeal as a single malt. It was introduced in the iconic "perfume bottles" at the end of the 1970s. The single malt brand was given more of a focus when the distillery was bought by Angus Dundee in 2000, who also introduced a peated variant called Old Ballantruan in 2005. Bottles from independent labels have also been common over the years.
Nose Seductive fruitcake, brimming with sultanas, nuts and a sprinkle of spices.
Palate The luxurious sherry notes, rich and full, are balanced well with hints of tobacco and oak spices.
Finish Crumbly fudge and vanilla.
Overall An incredible mature single malt.
