Black Bull 21 Year Old Duncan Taylor Blended Scotch Whisky (2021) 70cl

From Duncan Taylor, we have the twenty-one-year-old ‘Black Bull’ blended whisky. It’s masterfully balanced, with mainland and island whiskies forming the blend. The malt-to-grain ratio tilts ever so slightly toward malt. Expect powerful flavours, but plenty of nuance, too.

There’s nothing bull-headed about this blended whisky. This expression is a Black Bull 21 Year Old blended whisky that is all about precision. Using a high malt-to-grain ratio, this looks to Speyside and Highland malts that have been matured in sherry and bourbon casks for its primary components. Though there a good few cracking wee drams on top of those too! With a slew of awards to its name, this is as good an introduction to Black Bull as you can find.

TASTING NOTES

NOSE: Citrus, red apples, tangerines with a touch of caramel.

PALATE: Very lively and fresh with zesty notes. Nutmeg and cloves with the sweetness of vanilla and barley sugars emerging. Excellent balance.

FINISH: Warm pepper, soft nutty notes, and toasted marshmallows to finish. A fantastic expression that reminds us of Christmas.

About Duncan Taylor

Established in 1938, Duncan Taylor Scotch Whisky Limited is a specialist independent whisky merchant with one of the largest privately held collections of aged single malt and single grain Scotch whisky casks. Today, the company releases these prized spirits via an impressive range of award-winning product brands, all bottled at its headquarters in Huntly.

1938 - The family owned Scotch Whisky specialist was officially registered as Duncan Taylor & Co as a cask broker and trading company on the 27th of May 1938, at the business address of 20 Renfield Street, in Glasgow, Scotland.

1960 - In the 1960s, the late Abe Rosenberg, a native New Yorker who had made his fortune importing J&B Scotch to America just after World War II, bought the Scottish-owned Duncan Taylor & Co and began storing casks that he purchased from premium distilleries.

2002 - In 2002, eight years after Rosenberg’s death, whisky merchant Euan Shand returned Duncan Taylor & Co to Scottish hands when he acquired the company and its prized collection of single malts, single grains and aged blended whiskies.

Under Euan’s ownership, the company has grown into a global enterprise, with international presence in more than 60 countries and decorated brands with prestigious awards from around the world.

Although blends were Rosenberg’s business, the premium single malts and single grains that went into those blends were his passion.

2009 - With the company came the rights to Black Bull, an historic brand of premium blended Scotch that dates back to 1864. Pre-prohibition, Black Bull had once been one of the largest blended whiskies imported into the US, but was one of the victims of a dry America. Euan has re-energised the Black Bull brand with the release of new expressions every year since 2009.

Black Bull's accolades include the 2008 IWSC Trophy award given to Black Bull 12 Year Old for Best Blended Scotch Whisky category, Gold Award at the 2011 IWSC for Black Bull 12 Year Old.

2014 - Today, the company sits on the periphery of Speyside, in the heart of scenic Huntly, Aberdeenshire. It continues to lay down premium casks from various distilleries around the world, brokers casks, artistically stores and matures casks, blends and bottles for the global scotch whisky market.

2018 - More than 80 years after the company was first registered, Duncan Taylor Scotch Whisky is recognised on the global stage as one of the most innovative and dynamic whisky companies and has continued to act as a reputable whisky merchant, blender, bottler and cask broker.

The multi award winning company has built a reputation for its ownership of one of the largest privately held collections of some of the world’s most sought after vintage and rare whiskies.

2024 - Shawn Smith is the new Director of Duncan Taylor Scotch Whisky, following the announcement in April, that Chairman Euan Shand retired. Shawn brings a wealth of experience in technology finance and whisky and will continue the mantel as a family-owned business where Duncan Taylor Scotch Whisky has amassed an impressive portfolio of vintage and rare scotch whisky casks.

It's noteworthy that Duncan Taylor Scotch Whisky Limited has become part of Whisky Holdings, LP

306 W7th St Ste 500, Fort Worth, TX, USA 76102.
