TheScotch Malt Whisky Societywas founded in Edinburgh in 1983 by Phillip 'Pip' Hills who, while travelling around Scotland in the 1970s, fell in love with whiskies drawn straight from the cask. After he expanded his syndicate the Society was purchased by Glenmorangie PLC in 2004. In 2015, the Society was sold back to private investors. In June 2021, the private owners floated the holding company The Artisanal Spirits Company plc on the Alternative Investment Market of the London Stock Exchange.
It has a unique code system where the first number refers to the distillery and the second refers to the cask from which the bottle comes. SMWS also offers the largest range of distilleries of any independent bottler. These curiously named drams really do have something for every whisky lover!
The SMWS are one of the Britain's most revered independent bottlers with a worldwide network of partner bars with one mission of getting as much whisky at natural cask strength without water to different nations including USA, Canada, Switzerland, UK, Austria, Germany and many others.
TASTING NOTES
A cascade of orange, apricot and sour cherries tumbled into tangy marmalade as baked bananas arrived with maple syrup and brittle toffee. More savoury notes then emerged with pink peppercorns, tarragon and peppermint joining cigar boxes and a hot saw blade cutting through oak. Thick treacle coated the palate along with sticky red liquorice, strawberry sweets and prunes while menthol and burnt orange skin blended with spicy navy rum. Water lifted out woody oils as dark chocolate wrapped around coffee beans and wood char. Herbal aromas perfectly complemented butterscotch and creme brulee while on the palate, we found a delightful combination of mint chocolates, cinnamon and smoked bacon lingered eternally.
About George Dickel
Born 40 years after the signing of the Declaration of Independence, George A. Dickel was an established Nashville merchant when he entered the whisky business. Dickel grew his reputation for selling the smoothest, most mellow spirits in the region. Thus, Geo. A. Dickel & Co. was born and when the Cascade Hollow Distillery opened in 1878 in neighbouring Coffee County, George Dickel bought a large share.
Born from a belief that whisky made in the winter months produced a mellower sip, our liquids were always chilled to 40 degrees before charcoal filtering for a smooth yet complex taste.
Since the very beginning, their unique spelling of ‘whisky’ without the ‘e’ speaks to the passion from which our brand was born. A drive to rethink American whiskey and elevate the experience to rival the world’s finest scotch whiskies. To this day, we continue the tradition of bringing new perspectives to our liquid legacy.
