Originally established as a sake brewery in Fukushima Prefecture, Sasanokawa Shuzo expanded its operations to include whisky production in the 1940s. Asaka distillery is located in the Koriyama plain in Japan. "Yama" means "mountains" and "zakura" stands for "sakura" meaning "cherry trees", as a tribute to the Tohoku area (where the distillery stands), mainly known for its blooming trees.
