Ardbeg 27 Year Old 1978 Gordon & Macphail Connoisseurs Choice Map Label Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky (2005) 70cl

An older Ardbeg from direct fire distillation days. Some of the best Ardbeg produced by consensus was in this period. It tastes so good that people do not mind the 43% alcohol level.

Arguably the most famous independent bottler of Scotch whisky there is. Gordon & MacPhail was founded in Elgin in 1895 by James Gordon and John Alexander MacPhail. It is now owned by the Urquhart Family who have bow bottled over 350 different expressions from around 69 different distilleries. Gordon & MacPhail is the Trading name of Speymalt Whiskies while also owning the Benromach distillery, which they purchased in 1993. Some of the brands include Connoisseurs Choice, Cask Strength, Rare Old and Speymalt.

Tasting Notes

Nose : Peat smoke and sea-salt rise from the glass, with iodine and ash typical of Islay. A sherry-influenced sweetness threads through—raisin, fig, cocoa—layered with vanilla, toffee, and citrus zest. Medicinal notes add depth, while a persistent, smoky finish hints at the complexity to come.

Palate : Peat smoke floods the palate with briny, medicinal notes and coastal warmth. Rich and velvety, it delivers dark chocolate, espresso and treacle, touched by sherry-influenced dried fruit and spice. A full, oily mouthfeel coats the tongue, finishing with long saline smoke, cocoa and a peppery warmth.

Finish : Long, maritime peat and smoke linger, carried by iodine and sea-salt notes. A drying wave of ash gives way to hints of vanilla and oak, with a warm, resinous finish that coats the palate and lingers softly.
