TheScotch Malt Whisky Societywas founded in Edinburgh in 1983 by Phillip 'Pip' Hills who, while travelling around Scotland in the 1970s, fell in love with whiskies drawn straight from the cask. After he expanded his syndicate the Society was purchased by Glenmorangie PLC in 2004. In 2015, the Society was sold back to private investors. In June 2021, the private owners floated the holding company The Artisanal Spirits Company plc on the Alternative Investment Market of the London Stock Exchange.
It has a unique code system where the first number refers to the distillery and the second refers to the cask from which the bottle comes. SMWS also offers the largest range of distilleries of any independent bottler. These curiously named drams really do have something for every whisky lover!
TASTING NOTES
We all mentioned cherries on the nose neat, boozy chocolate coated cherries, black ‘mountain cherry' liqueur as well as an aviation cocktail which led us all to fly high. On the palate the descriptors were not as unison and ranged from lighter fuel, marker pens and oiled leather, to pear drops and vanilla essence and finally coco beans and nutmeg in hessian sacks. Water added rough farmhouse cider, melted candles, Turkish delight and cod liver oil on the nose while to taste we flew again, in fact to the city of Zadar on Croatia's Dalmatian coast. There we enjoyed a cocktail of the same name consisting of Maraschino liqueur, amarena premium syrup and rum garnished with a maraska candied cherry.
About Caroni
Established in 1923 on the site of the old Caroni sugar factory with both column and pot stills, Caroni produced rums notable for a distinctive heavy profile which was supplied to the British Navy. Despite protests, in 2001 it was sold by the Trinidad government to Angostura, and it was then closed in 2002. But wait, that was not the end of Caroni distillery! The winds of fate changed when, while visiting Trinidad in 2004, Luca Gargano learnt of a warehouse full of barrels of rums in the derelict distillery. The barrels were purchased, bottled and sold and are now frantically sought out by collectors - a phenomenon termed ‘Caronimania’.
