Jack Daniel's Distillery Series Selection #009 High Toast Rye Whiskey Barrel Finish Distillery Exclusive Tennessee Whiskey (2022) 37.5cl
A double barrelled rye, Jack Daniels Distillery Series Selection #9 delivers a fun sip with a heavy love it or hate it emphasis on banana notes.
While double oaked bourbons have become more common in the last few years, the number of double oaked ryes hitting the market is still scarce in comparison. It’s exciting to see a major distillery in Tennessee play in this space, even if this initial run is relegated to their Distillery Series. The company states in its press release that “Jack Daniel’s Distillery Series Toasted Barrel Finished Rye is a Straight Tennessee Rye Whiskey originally barrelled Summer 2014 and then re-barrelled in high-toast, no char oak barrels in October 2019.”
The sip starts off with a nose full of pleasing sweeter aromas that highlight its time in the high-toast finishing barrels and effortlessly draws you in. An enjoyable palate highlights rye grain, spice, oak, and has a strong focus on ripe banana notes. The sip ends with an additional dash of banana and a concoction of spices. Well-formed overall, you have to really be a lover of the typical banana note found in so many Jack Daniel’s products to enjoy this, as it takes a predominant role throughout the whiskey. If you’re not a fan of this note, it may be hard for you to get behind this rye. Overall, the Distillery Series releases are a fun way for Jack Daniel’s to experiment and bring more atypical offerings to the table
Palate: Big ripe banana | Rye grain | Toasted oak | Vanilla | Light peppercorn spice
Finish: Dash of banana | Rye spice | Dry oak | Leather | White peppercorn | Building spice | Lingering
About Jack Daniel's
Jack Daniel's is the best-selling American whiskey in the world. Despite that fact it can legally be categorised as a straight bourbon, it has always shunned this title, preferring to market itself as a Tennessee Whiskey. These are similar to straight bourbons but have the additional requirement of having been filtered through maple wood charcoal, a practice known as the Lincoln County Process. History has not always given the distillery an easy ride though. Tennessee was an early adopter of Prohibition in 1910, and one of the last to repeal it in 1938 (five years later than the repeal at Federal level). Even today the distillery is still located in a "dry" county, meaning none of its products are sold in its hometown or those around it. The distillery was then only operational for four years before being forced to close again during the second world war. Ten years later it was purchased by the Brown-Forman corporation and its fortunes turned for good. Its classic black-labelled Old No.7 brand (named after the distillery’s original DSP number) is now a globally recognised product.
