Jack Daniel's Distillery Series Selection #013 Twice Barrelled Distillery Exclusive Tennessee Straight Rye Whiskey (2023) 37.5cl

A twice barrelled Jack Daniel’s rye that fixes many of the issues from a previous iteration, which results in a wonderfully rich sip.

The rye is impressively potent at 107 proof, giving off wonderfully rich scents of Maraschino cherries, charred oak, and burnt cinnamon caramel sauce, along with softer scents of bread pudding and French vanilla. The palate comes out strong, highlighting charred oak and bootstrap molasses before gently transitioning to cream soda, dark brown sugar, and a touch of anise and clove. The finish only features a hint of the dry oak note that dominated the Special Release edition last year. Though tannic oak is still present, the lack of dominating dry oak allows cinnamon, maple syrup, and root beer to come across more prominently.

There’s no denying the richness of the double barrel finish is alive and well in this release, but the question remains if Jack Daniel’s rye even needs it. Being part of the company’s Distillery Series allows experimentation, which is always welcomed, but if you haven’t had Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel Rye in a while (which now features a green label and a higher age), it's worth a look. Jack Daniel’s Distillery Series #13 Twice Barrelled Tennessee Straight Rye is a big improvement from the previous double barrelled release and features a wide breadth of big potent flavours that many ryes on the market struggle to offer in the same way.

About Jack Daniel's

Jack Daniel's is the best-selling American whiskey in the world. Despite that fact it can legally be categorised as a straight bourbon, it has always shunned this title, preferring to market itself as a Tennessee Whiskey. These are similar to straight bourbons but have the additional requirement of having been filtered through maple wood charcoal, a practice known as the Lincoln County Process. History has not always given the distillery an easy ride though. Tennessee was an early adopter of Prohibition in 1910, and one of the last to repeal it in 1938 (five years later than the repeal at Federal level). Even today the distillery is still located in a "dry" county, meaning none of its products are sold in its hometown or those around it. The distillery was then only operational for four years before being forced to close again during the second world war. Ten years later it was purchased by the Brown-Forman corporation and its fortunes turned for good. Its classic black-labelled Old No.7 brand (named after the distillery’s original DSP number) is now a globally recognised product.
