Babe Ruth and his accomplishments need no introduction. His career spanned from before Prohibition (1914) to shortly after Prohibition (1935), so that makes him the perfect candidate for a brand that focuses on the Gilded Age/Prohibition to fixate on. The more interesting story is how a company like Luxco/Ross & Squibb managed to talk the estate of Babe Ruth into utilizing his name to sell booze. Babe loved to drink, but his preferred brown spirit was actually Scotch – Dewar’s to be exact. So it’s odd that a brand wants to tie his name to bourbon.

“Remus Babe Ruth Reserve is a special collector’s release inspired by one of the most iconic figures in American history, the immortal Babe Ruth,” said Ross & Squibb Distillery Brand Manager Allison O'Brien. “Remus is inspired by the finest bourbon of the 1920’s, and partnering with the finest baseball player of the 1920’s gives bourbon and baseball fans a unique and memorable way to celebrate America’s pastime.”

There are a lot of Easter Eggs hidden all over every bottle of Remus Babe Ruth. For starters, the number of bottles (10,624) directly correlates to the number of “At Bats” he had. Your bottle number allows you to view information for what happened during that AB by scanning the QR code on the back of the bottle.

Next we see that this bourbon is a blend of three different mash bills. The number “3” was chosen because that was Babe Ruth’s number. Doing a deeper dive into those mash bills tells us that the blending team used MGP’s classic “High Rye” Bourbon (LBSV – 60% corn, 36% rye, 4% malted barley), a 49% ryed bourbon (LISV – 51% corn, 39% rye, 10% malted rye) and a bourbon that contains 44% rye in the mash bill. All the components are between 6-7 years of age

About George Remus

Remus is one of the lines of bourbon produced by MGP in Indiana. Headed up by Ian Stirsman, an ambitious, adventurous and overall awesome dude with the majority of his career ahead of him as of 2026.

Kentucky may be known for its bourbon, but no town does rye whiskey and high-rye bourbon better than Lawrenceburg, Indiana. Since the mid-1800s, “Whiskey City” has been synonymous with the world’s finest rye whiskey.

Nestled in between the Ohio River and Tanner’s Creek sits a monument to Lawrenceburg’s rich distilling history, Ross & Squibb Distillery. Our globally renowned tradition of crafting the finest ryes and high-rye bourbons continues today under the discerning eye of our Master Distiller, Ian Stirsman.

Aside from its prime trade location along the Ohio River, Ross & Squibb Distillery, and the distilleries that came before us, have benefitted from sitting atop the Great Miami Aquifer. Cold and pure, the water we use to craft our whiskey is naturally limestone filtered, lowering the sulphur and iron content that negatively affect a whiskey's taste. The result is a bold, spicy flavour no other region can replicate.

In the 1920s, if baseball had Ruth, bourbon had Remus. Pharmacist, successful attorney and King of the Bootleggers, Remus used his pharmaceutical and legal expertise to find loopholes in the Volstead Act that allowed him to dispense his juice to the masses for “medicinal purposes”.

Carefully crafted at the historic Ross & Squibb Distillery in Lawrenceburg, Indiana – just miles from Cincinnati where Remus ran his Prohibition empire – each bourbon is made to meet the uncompromising standards Remus’ bourbon was famous for during his reign.

Whether you select the original, 95-rated Remus Straight Bourbon Whiskey, the highly acclaimed, limited edition Remus Repeal Reserve Series, Remus Single Barrel Bourbon or Remus Gatsby Reserve, each offering is as original as the King of the Bootleggers, himself.

MGP Itself is a power house of whisky and the distillery is used by many brands including Remus, Great Gatsby, Brother's Bond, Rossville Union, Smooth Ambler, Templeton just to name a few. Out the back of the distillery is a further 6 million litres of Neutral Grain Spirit that has not been barrelled on top of all of their rickhouses full of barrels. A true monster that is somewhat hidden in plain sight yet not open to the public due to its industrial nature.
