Wemyss Malts has given its Velvet Fig blended malt an older sibling! This 25 year old variation of Velvet Fig was made with five sherry casks of single malt from Speyside and the Highlands, as well as 15 sherry hogshead casks for unpeated Bunnahabhain, which were then filled into refill hosgheads to marry. Velvet Fig was introduced to Wemyss Malts’ blended malts portfolio as a limited edition, no-age-statement expression in 2014. The bottling was comprised of a selection of malt whiskies that were matured solely in ex-oloroso Sherry casks, the effect of which were notes of sultanas, dates and, well, figs. Aromas of rich blackcurrant jam, toffee, oak, aromatic spices and cigar box are balanced on the nose. The palate offers notes of dried fruit, maraschino cherries, dates, plums and apricot, alongside milk chocolate, wood spices and leathery meatiness.

Official Tasting Notes

Nose – Rich blackcurrant preserves and maple toffee balance against complex woods aromas and aromatic spices that remind one of an antique humidor.
Palate – Rich fruit notes of dried figs, maraschino cherries, dates, plums and dried apricot alongside premium milk chocolate creates a flavour reminiscent of Black Forest gateau. Subtle wood spices and a leathery meatiness’s adds depth to the whisky and an unctuous, velvety mouthfeel.
